I have found that when I hang out with a group of people and we meet with sombody else that certain someone will connect with one of us more than all of us. Sometimes I have chemistry with, whom I like to refer to, the NPC and sometimes one of my friends have it. The NPC can of course be friendly with the group as a whole but most of the time the NPC will be mostly interested in one. When playing D&D I have found that the player with the best chemistry with the DM will get to talk and influence events more than the other players. I've also noticed that some players with a lower shame treshold can easily hog the spotlight more than what actually benefits the game. I'd like to see in D&D Next a social initiative, or reaction roll, when encountering NPCs. This would just be a flat winner takes all check where the NPC will focus and talk to the winner of that check. The others can of course chime in but the winner of the social check would get to 'hold the phone'. I see a number of advantages with such a roll. Points spent on Charisma would be points well spent. A charisma dumper couldn't steal the spotlight by interrupting or increasing vocal output. The DM would have to speak with different players without having to think about it all the time. The speaker would get to finish the conversation in his own pace without having to rush things. What do you think? Is it preferable that social encounters are free for alls or could the gameplay be improved with a social initiative roll?
