The Real Test of Back to the Basics...

I mean serously, all this talk about simplifying monsters and making things easier for the GM is great and all, but what about the real tools that we used in 1st edition that never made it to 2nd and 3rd?

That's right, I want to know if we're going to see the wandering prostitute table. I mean it's not really D&D without it. :p

Slightly less humorously, I am hoping for some good wandering monster tables. After all, I still have my old wandering prostitute table, and the rules haven't really changed enough on that regard that I need a new one. It still works just fine.

I agree, but conversion rules for Boot Hill and Gamma World are equally important.

Think I might use Appendix D, the random lower planes creature tables, for inhabitants of Kythri, the plane of chaos in my Eberron game.

See, this is the stuff I missed out on by playing B/X D&D instead of AD&D, isn't it?

Seriously, I know some folks decry "random" tables of all kinds, but I find that they sometimes prompt my imagination when I'm stuck for an idea. I'd love to see some good "Random NPC motivation" tables or "Random Local Rumor" tables - maybe not in the DMG, but as part of some kind of DM's resource. (Anyone know of a good site online for stuff like this - it sounds like something that should be out there).

Of course, they don't have to be random. I used to look over the random dungeon dressing tables, but I never rolled on them.
