The evening passes, with Tchikkatlikkit finally steadying the ship with a the simple deployment of something that looks like a metallic junebug the size of a small dog attached to a silver leash. It is tossed over the side unceremoniously. "brkkxxt. Astral Anchor." He says to Casandra, after he affixes the other end of the leash to the railing. The june-bug/anchor construct suddenly buzzes to life and hovers alongside the ship, attached by it's leash. Amazingly, the ships stops moving, even when the wind picks up slightly. You are moored some 300 feet up, over a rough desert mesa. It is a moonlit night in the desert, nearly as beautiful as it is in the daytime. ----------------------- OOC- As far as I can tell, everyone but the ever-grumpy Khulmbanos takes a shift at the watch? I randomly chose Osric to be the one on Watch when this happens. Chapter ends after this 'encounterette' and we go on to the third part! Always feel free to post OOCly here as long as you can 'set it apart' somehow and mark it 'OOC'- like any way that its obvious. It doesn't really matter how you do it. --------------------------- The shifts pass. Ashan is first at watch, and ends up staying a bit later than he meant to. Still, it's hard to wake people you hardly know- and he is the only elf aboard. Finally, he goes to wake Osric, who he finds is already groggily looking around the cabin for his holy symbol. Ashan retires to his cabin and Osric takes his place. The first half an hour seems to go for Osric without incident; only the raspy clicking of Tchik's breathing thorax--the formian equivalent of snoring-- can be heard for the most part, as well as the metal-hum of the astral anchor steadying your craft. But then- there is the sound. Years later, when the group met for a reunion in Sigil they can only describe it laughingly as "that roar." It is sudden and loud, although distant; a deep throaty beastlike sound echoes across the canyons and shatters the night. By the sheer volume of it- it sounds like a massive creature roaring in triumph, or perhaps anger. "RRRRRrrrrrrrrrrooooooooooooooooooooorhrhrhrhrhrhrhhHHHHHHHHHH!" Casandra awakens with a start and sits straight up. She bangs her head on a hanging cookpot over her hammock. The rest of you are awakened quickly as well. The roar again..just a few seconds later. "RRRRRrrrrrrrrrroooooAAAOOOOOOOOOOoooooorhrhrhrhrhrhrhhHHHHHHHHHH!" Within seconds, everyone is standing nervously on the deck looking at each other. Straining at the edge of hearing, most of you hear the sound of a distant chorus of several strange inhuman voices singing a strange language. There is an undeniable tune to it, and low drumming.. and there is the unmistakable crash of a brass gong near the end. The night goes quiet again. -----OOC---- (Passive Listen Checks will automatically be performed so that each character can determine which direction the sound came from. Beat the 15 for direction, 17 for approximate distance and 20+ for "more details") Ashan (roll 5)(+1 Wisdom)=6 (can't tell which direction) Casandra (roll 13)(+2 Wisdom)=15 (pretty sure it's east) Hremelan (roll 13)(+3 Listen)=16 (pretty sure it's east) Khulmbanos (roll 4)(+3 Listen)=7 (can't tell which direction) Osric (roll 8)(+3 Listen)=11 (can't tell which direction) Riss (roll 14)(+4 Listen)=18 (think's it's about two miles away. Sure it's east) Tchikkatlikkit (roll 3)(+0 Listen)=3 (can't tell which direction) --------------------- Riss, Casandra and Hremelan move to the other railing and strain to hear the last notes. They are fairly sure it's east. Riss thinks it's about 2 miles away.
