The Solution to All Problem Players/DMs

Talk to them.

Don't google how to fix them. Don't ask the internet why they are that way. As amazing as the ENWorld community is we're just going to tell you the same thing everytime. Talk to them.

On a side note if you want to post about how bad someone is just to brag how bad they are then by all means do so I love those posts cause they make me feel good about my group. Just don't ask how to fix them.

Now that you mention it, I do notice a startling similarity between all my responses to the "help, my players are awful" posts.

Makes you wonder why talking to the people you're supposed to be playing a game with is so difficult.

By all means talk to them. Just don't expect a change. Sometimes people have different wants, needs, and motives. Sometimes it is in everyone's best interest to part company.

Other times it's in your best interest, and sod what the other side thinks.
:hmm:

I think it is much better to ignore the problems and just see if you can keep fiddling with the system until their play improves. I hope that 5e fixes all these bad player/gm issues.

Talk to them.
Or yell at them. Either way, it won't make a bit of difference. I have never once seen a problem player change their bad habits, and I talked to every one of them that I played with. Sometimes they'll chill out for a session or two, but they always revert right back into their annoying habits. If people have actually seen players do a 180, I'd be very interested in hearing about it. Because I have just never seen it happen and am under the impression that it never happens.

I hope that 5e fixes all these bad player/gm issues.
And if 5e doesn't fix it, I'm sure 6e will. What edition does everyone think it will be by the time all of our problems have been solved? 10e, 15e? I'd think the game would be just about perfect by the time we hit 20e.

I've never seen a 180, but, I have seen, perhaps some shift in play.

One player who was massively slow in play sped up respectably after being shown exactly how much time he was taking at the table. When the clock showed that he was taking more time during combat than the rest of the players, including the DM, combined, he sorted himself out and play improved drastically.

So, talking does help sometimes.
