The Spider and the Moth

Right outside my front door, right now, a moth is caught in a spider's web. Every time to moth stops frantically trying to escape, the spider skips down the strands in an attempt to bite the moth and inject its poison. Whenever the moth feels the touch of the spider's legs, it begins to fight furiously, which causes the spider to skitter back up its web and wait until the fit subsides.

It's only a matter of time until the moth is too tired to resist anymore. I'm morbidly fascinated as I watch this event play out. I'm wondering if I should get involved.

Should I free the moth and deny the spider its meal? The moth is a beautiful creature; the spider shriveled and repulsive. Should I do nothing and allow the natural course of things to hold sway? Empathy with the moth urges me to interfere, empathy with the spider suggests I do nothing.

What would you do?

Replace it...

Get some flies and put them in!

Been fly season where I am. Have a hunting spider in the window. Leave window open, flies hit the screen... wham!

I do not have to run around like a nut using a fly swatter and it is neat to watch the spider hunt.

Ants, moths, butterflies, bees... let them live while attempting to cull the fly pop.

'sides eating a pretty moth is not going to make an ugly spider any prettier...

Just watch it play out.

This is Nature.

This is also why I never use "it's natural" as an argument in favor of a process or course of action. It's why I don't romanticize Nature.

It's also fascinating to watch the dance.
