The main issue with .ePub is that it picked up the tags better. I write in MS Word 2010 and then save as a Web Page, Filtered. As far as getting my book up on the website it was about the same for Amazon (Kindle) and Barnes and Noble (Nook). You give them a bit of information and simply publish the book. I'd recommend getting the freeware Sigil to create the .ePub and .prc files from the .html file and then a Nook and Kindle emulator for the PC or Mac so you can see what your book will like before you publish it.  They both have good reporting software. The hard part is the publicity.
