Vagan's gaze tightened. "Let's just say that he'll be staying with us for a while." As his men completed their investigation, he arranged for Wilbur to be carted off. "Don't jostle him too much", the commander ordered, "I'd hate to have to waste one of those expensive potions on him." After the interviews with the other guests were concluded, Vagan conferred with his men, several of which gave disapproving glances to the party. When the little meeting was over, Officer Vagan approached the three would-be sleuths once again. "There's just one more formality", he said with a casual air. "I'll need to see your Orussus City Watch badges." When the trio failed to produce any such identification, the casual air vanished with the blink of an eye. "So, just on your own authority, with no dispensation from the High Court, you took it upon yourselves to force this...person, to accompany you to a Watch station? A man you suspected of being a murderer? A man who gave every indication of being violent? And you armed yourselves knowing that he was likely to resort to violence. Tell me, Mr. Magruder, what do you think the outcome would have been if your finger had slipped on the trigger of that little dart-slinger when he was half-way down the street instead of in front of a room full of witnesses? I'll tell you exactly what would have happened, you'd be in our cells on a charge of attempted murder or worse. And what do you think would have happened if your friend's bolt had found it's way into one of the Tower's guests instead of the Tower's walls? Do you know that would make you responsible for his injuries as much as your baby-faced friend? You're fortunate that the owner decided to not press charges against you for property damage; I know several innkeepers in town who would have. Do you have anything to say for yourselves?" Wisely, Ryland, Enialis and Devlin kept silent. His voice softening the tiniest iota, Vagan continued: "Now, is there any reason you couldn't have reported what you know to us and had us pick him up? In fact, if it wasn't for the fact that his crossbow bolts look pretty interesting to us, you'd be going along with him. Now, are you going to be kidnapping or shooting any more of our citizens or visitors here?" The three answered in the negative. "Very well. Mr. Magruder, we'll be keeping your crossbow and bolts as evidence, you can get them back when the High Court has decided Mr. Wilbur's fate.
