It is a frigid night. A bitter, biting wind lashes like an icy whip from time to time out of the east. The snows of the last few days have made the shapes of the dead (those that never rose) muted and indistinct, but now the skies have cleared and the light of no less than seven full moons has turned the field into a blanket of glittering diamonds.

The last two weeks are a bit of blur to you. You remember well enough the circumstance that led up to your participation in the chaotic battle in the skeletal remains of Shadukar, but what exactly happened before everything went black at midnight on the 16th? Did you hallucinate that odd feeling just before darkness fell, like a snapping or tearing deep within you? It’s impossible to say. Your next memory is one of awakening and feeling...different. Changed. The clashing armies were gone, leaving the fields littered with corpses.

For the next several days you have wandered about the blackened ruins, not really certain what to do next. From time to time you have seen the furtive shapes of others who do not rest easy in death, but you have had direct contact with no one. Perhaps you have crossed over to the gray wastes of Dolurhh?

Tonight is the eve of the new year. Reflection upon the date, the death of one year and the birth of another, has cemented the reality of what has befallen you. It is a tradition throughout the Five Nations on this day to honor those who have departed over the last twelve months, to celebrate their lives with food and drink and story and song. You may well wonder if any glasses are being raised in your memory this night.

Although you are unaffected by the searing cold, some vestigial instinct makes you crave shelter. The burned out shell of what was once the manor house of a well-to-do minor noble or gentleman farmer is adequate for your purposes. As you creep into the grim wreck, you realize you are not alone...

First Lieutenant Tibalt Graf wanders through the ruins of Shadakur, almost noiselessly, leaving no footprints in the snow behind him. Now and then he stops and crouches by a frozen corpse, reaches out a hand, pauses, stands, and keeps moving.

Friendly fire. Has to be friendly fire.

He occasionally reaches into his pocket, stops, looks disturbed, withdraws his hand, pats his coat down, looks into his satchel. After a moment he keeps moving again. He has been repeating this for days.

Arriving at a relatively intact ruin, he pauses, and watches his feet as he mounts the steps. He carefully steps through an open picture window.

Hello ? Anyone in here? His voice seems muffled, as if by distance.

What the ...

He can't shake the memory, or the absence of one, out of his mind. It knaws at him, as does the tomb-like silence. It takes an hour of scrubbing to get the dried, caked blood off his blade.

The blood looks to be days old, but how could that be? Unless...

Finally readjusting his gear, he looks himself over. Sword and shield, ring and chain shirt, dagger and backpack. Everything is in order, at least it seems to be. A captain of House Deneith, he has seen many strange things. This...this is very different. He feels shaken to the very core.

Got to serch for my company. The have to be around here somewhere. Someone has to be!

But he finds no one. None of the stinking corpses are of anyone in the Guild. None of the few shambling forms wear the crest of the League.

If this is death, it isn't so bad. Other than being bleak and boring.

As he kicks a frozen body, "If we are all dead spirits, why don't you get up and join me?"

There is no movement, and after spiting, he moves on. On for days, in which direction, he can't tell. Then finally, there is a building ahead. One that isn't completely gutted. One that may have some answers.

The crunching snow would give away his presence, but he is beyond caring at this point. Even an enemy would be welcome now. With a forceful yell behind a drawn blade, the door is kicked open.

”Honey, I'm home!”

Then he sees the other eyes.

Awake with a blinding hunger, it is easily delt with...then what has happend? What have I done? Surely I could not have done this....must get to shelter and regain our bearings.... What is this, there is something here already..... "What have you done???? and what is this madness..."

Couple PbP mechanics notes: Can everyone put their character name in the title line of your posts? It would be helpful, especially for those that have chosen user names different from your character names. Also, I've fixed the spoiler block with the character sheet in my first post- it wasn't opening because I had a couple unclosed tags.
