Great article! It's my understanding that the opposite was true. He very much was the champion of the individual contributor. That's why there are copywrite entanglement surrounds the PDFs of the early dragons. Granted some of his writing seems a tad arrogant (you need look no further than the Preface of the 1st Ed. DMG). However, he was is in the middle of creating an entirely new category of game. And a new kind of game company. A strong hand in defining borders was understandable at the time, in my opinion. Consider that while he was writing 1st Ed, he wrote in Dragon "A month has not gone by in the past two years when I haven't been interviewed by one or more newspaper writers ... who want to know all about the D&D game and the concepts behind it."(Dragon #22, Feb 1979). The Gary I had a brief email conversation with about a year before his death was not remotely arrogant. A really nice, approachable, humble guy. If you haven't yet, I strongly recommend reading both Playing at the World and Empire of Immagination (linked on original post). They will give you a clear picture of what his efforts for our hobby actually were. For me, it is crystal clear that without EGG our hobby, if it existed at all, would be a tiny fraction of what it is today.
