The Uncommon Commoner

Crothian

Ever heard of a PDF company called Plot Device? I know I hadn't until I got a copy of some of their stuff for review (Spectrum Shift: Unlikely Heroes Compilation). It's good...really good. They basically have classes for different kinds of more normal not so adventureing people like the noble, guard, dabbler (weaker wizard), and laborer. There are seven different ones. And while none of them are really designed to adventure, they are almost balanced to the adventurer classes. They gain good abilities as they gamin levels so unlike the NPC classes there is actually reasons to keep going in these classes.

The reason I really like them is becasue it is a little weaker, and it depicts the more common people allowing them to actually be a little more useful. The Guard for instance is not as good as a fighter but they do get more skill points. They eventually learn all martial weapons but not to begin with.

The classes really work best in a lower magical setting, but even in a high magical one if you want the local guard to get caught up in adventures this will work for it.

This covers an area that I really like and think there is a need for, but more importantly it does it well.

They have a pretty cool webpage here:

It is good to read a book that is both good and one I want to use.

Please tell me you misspelt it and the class is actually the Guard.

Nifty. Be nice to have guards that aren't fighters or warriors, since that doesn't always quite fit. Common people advance too!

Just finished the review, and while it doesn't get a glowing 5 it gets a damn strong 4. I think its a great little book that should help a lot of people looking for a lowerer magic alternative.
