Got Ravenloft: Van Richten's Guide to the Walking Dead and Mongoose's Slayer's Guide to Undead (By someguy named Gygax) this weekend and they complement each other quite well. One word of warning, while Fear & Horror checks are part of the Ravenloft setting, It is the artwork in the Mongoose book that actually requires a check, especially the inside covers. Van Richten's Guide: Presented as a collection of notes and letters by the good doctor and the Weathermay-Foxgrove twins that have taken over his work. The book looks at the Obedient Dead; Skeletons and Zombies, The Hungry Dead; Ghouls and Ghasts and The Restless Dead; Revenants. The Restless dead chapter is problably the best chapter, greatly expanding on the what fuels the unstopable revenant. It has alternate abilities to make a simple skeleton much more dangerous, feats for Necromancers, a chapter on "common" weaknesses and several new types of undead and a couple of NPC undead to use (these are especially good!). Slayer's guide to Undead: This book looks at each type of undead, weakest to strongest and presents them in template form (Including Bodak, Devourer, Allip, & Mohrg templates). Also included are variant versions of the basic undead (Skassassin, a skeletal assassin, two variant ghouls, one paralyzes with a gaze the other by spiting) and the tactics of each of these creatures. That is the best part of this book, ways to put the proper fear and horror back into facing the dead walking after you. But both of these books are great for the newly rolled Ghostbreaker (See Mindscapes) or a DM that just wants to "raise the dead" for an evening.
