Better. As I understand it, D&D 5th no longer centers around miniatures, so you don't need the miniatures, maps, etc., all of which drive up the price of an introductory product (and hopefully the lightly marbled dice are better than the crappy dice of previous D&D starters!). The Starter Set rules go up to 5th level. I prefer low-level adventuring, but the previous starter's levels 1-3 were too limiting. And if you're familiar with this newfangled "internet" and want character generation rules (which weren't part of previous starter sets), you can download the free Basic Rules, which will be further updated with monsters and stuff when the hardbacks come out. You can also buy miniatures for the Starter Set pregens as a separate purchase. I do like the eye candy, so personally wouldn't have minded a more expensive starter set with tiles and miniatures, like the 3.5 (?) Basic Set. If you want pretty cardboard stuff, look at the more expensive Pathfinder Beginner Box, which also goes up to 5th level (?). Pathfinder, of course, has the free SRD book online, as well as several good free adventures (Dagger Rock, We Be Goblins), not to mention an established base of gamers.
