Lloria stepped to the front of the group and absorbed a good amount of punishment on her armor, but gave almost as good as she got; the warrior priest was perhaps constrained by dealing out subdual rather than lethal damage. Rosten flanked the bear to good effect, while Darrow charged in to help beat it into submission. The bear refused to go down, however, until after Aerikoth joined in the fight magically with two spells that conjured glowing hands to grapple with the creature. Once it was down and barely breathing, Dermot – the ranger looking a bit ill – cried out to stop. He and his three fighting companions, breathing heavily, watched as Aerikoth started to chant words of magic, finally holding up a cocoon and pointing it at the bear, which polymorphed into small black kitten. Rosten was pleased with the outcome, observing that the size and ferocity of the bear would no doubt earn them good coin from the Westgate arena owner. Lloria was less sure of this, and Dermot had become less than enthusiastic about the whole business. Aerikoth explained that the bear would stay in its current form until the wizard chose to return it to its natural form, or if it entered a strong enough dispel magic area of effect. Now that they had a cute, if occasionally hissing, kitten on their hands, even Rosten’s enthusiasm for selling it - or disposing of it, if necessary - waned, as the hin knelt down to pet it. Dermot reinforced Lloria’s argument that the bear was not what the arena was necessarily looking for, arguing that they should turn it back and let it be, but noted the experiment at least had been a success for future use of the polymorph technique. Aerikoth confirmed to Darrow that the spell had worked previously on people, recalling the case of the former pirate Pincer. The group after some discussion decided to eventually undo their transformation of Old Scratch, the ranger looking relieved at the prospect. Lloria observed some bones in the cave and wondered if the bear had chomped up a merchant or something, encouraging the others to check for any gold around before they left. As the warrior priest did this, Darrow focused on scratching the kitten’s ears and mumbling something in dwarven to it. Rosten, the normally hardened ex-pirate by now converted to the polymorphed kitten’s cause, watched fascinated as Darrow played with it, then made peace with Dermot, saying no harm was done in the end and the ranger had fulfilled his duty. (Indeed, the ranger's initial diffidence had been a troubling aspect to the business of capturing and selling such a woodland creature. Perhaps his old devotions needed re-awakening, after so much time spent primarily dealing with unsavory people, often far from nature. --C) After closely examining the bones, Aerikoth informed the others that they were goblinoid in nature, abating potential concerns about the bear having consumed human flesh. Darrow, noticing some crude stonework, wondered if the cave had been a goblin lair in the past. Lloria thought there would be more junk lying around if that were the case; she had been disappointed in the search for loot.
