Following some more conversation about the mysteries behind the clan’s recent difficulties, and a quick beer run made by Darrow, a messenger arrived to bring them to meet Fignar Ironson in the treasury antechamber. The dwarven defenders at the threshold checked for permission first, then let the clan guests pass under their watchful eyes. Fignar recognized them as the adventuring company Helm’s Shadows, despite their having some membership changes – the new treasurer said he did not remember the hin or the “giant woman” since the company’s last appearance in the clan audience hall the previous month. Nevertheless, he told them a deal was a deal, as the portion of the dragon hoard set aside for the company’s reward did not specify which particular individuals were to be present. The adventurers nodded their agreement, with Rosten’s eyes gleaming at the prospect. Before they proceeded with the transaction, in which the company would receive a one-fifth share of the recovered gold, Fignar said that he had some questions for them. He explained that his late predecessor Toran oversaw the clan treasury with a rather jealous eye, not sharing much. But from what the clan council were told by the first scouting group to the hoard, there should have been more than 20,000 gold there, dwarves being good at estimating these things. Darrow rubbed his chin thoughtfully and agreed, mentioning that it was practically knee deep. Fignar then shared that only 6,000 gold total was recovered in the end, which he termed a big difference from the original estimate. Being informed of this prompted exclamations from the party of both disappointment and bafflement. Darrow stated that somebody must have taken the rest – or, as Rosten interjected, the clan was not being straight with them. Fignar gave Darrow the chance to flatten the hin for insulting the clan’s honor, which Darrow replied to with a light jest, but then he leaned in to speak something directly into Rosten’s ear. Fignar continued describing the retrieval of the remaining part of the hoard, including a gold dragon statuette the clan had decided to gift to the company, as a gesture of appreciation for its aid in recovering the remains of the dwarven expedition. In response to a question from Dermot, Fignar confirmed that after one full load made it out of the cavern, Toran had insisted on accompanying the next run, being enthralled by the treasure. After that disaster, it only took the dwarves one more load to remove what was left; one of the miners who was on the first scout team confirmed that the hoard was a lot smaller than before. The clan treasurer then asked the company to count the gold in their portion and take possession of it, before he asked them some more questions. Dermot asked about the statue and Fignar said he did not know its value, and it had not been counted as part of their promised share. Among the new company members, Lloria chuckled ironically at the disappointing total for their group of five, which Dermot revealed as 1,236 gold, while Rosten sighed and his shoulders slumped, the hin evidently having pictured much more in the way of treasure. Fignar told them they could divide it on their own time.
