Most of Sauron's defence is the fact that he only needs to wait before the fate of the ring brings him back into power again. That's a long time to be out of the game. Being out the game is almost nearly as bad as losing it. What good is him having the ring if he's ruling Earth in the year 89,780? By then, it may be a barren rock, with no living things on it,  no precious minerals , nothing. By technicality, it may be a victory, but its not a very good one.I still say Earth even though Sauron could wait Earth out indefinitely.</blockquote>
