The WotC forums are making me feel old

I was reading a thread in the WotC Eberron forums about Glassteel. With around 20 replies, the general concensus was that it was a Forgotten Realms spell that's been around since 2E. No mentions of 1st edition, any early module appearances, etc.

I much prefer a forum like this where a good percentage of the people have memories that go back further than mine ;) (Although the Eberron discussion is usually pretty good over there, mostly thanks to Keith's presence).

At least the people over there are aware of 2E. Would be worse if none of them had ever played that. ;)

Anyway, out of curiosity, when did glassteal originally appear? Will it make you feel older if I said I hadn't ever played 1e too, so my first experience with the spell was in 2E? :p

1st edition Player's Handbook (if not someplace else earlier).

No, not one person. However, several dozen people did, and didn't even question whether it predated 2E or even the Forgotten Realms.

Didn't Glassteel first appear in AD&D Player's Handbook, or am I wrong (and unintentionally making you feel older, glyfair)?

(sighs)

Back in 2nd Edition, they say ...

(remembers something: the argument about whether the bard would survive the transition to 2nd edition, and how reader input in Dragon Magazine and elsewhere saved him as a class.)

The WotC forums indeed do make people feel older. And usually that has nothing to do with remembering spells

I think it appeared in an adventure, not in the core book. I think *cross fingers* it was Lost Caverns of Tsjocanth? I don't have that one anymore so could anyone verify?

Glassteel was in the 1st edition handbook, and may well have appeared in a Strategic Gamer or source earlier than that. I don't believe it was in the original 1974 release, though. Heck, Magic Missile wasn't even in that release! :)
