This is an electronic (PDF) release downloaded from www.RPGnow.com I really REALLY enjoyed Ambient's first release (Librum Equitis 1) so I decided to give this book a try even though these 'evil necromantic' theme books don't usually appeal to me. Honestly, I think Ambient went out and set a new standard in PDF format releases. This book is BEAUTIFUL. The art and layout are world-class - easily in the same league as Monte Cook's releases, if not better. And the content is great, if a little disturbed at times. It's full of flavour material, describing the ascent of Gar'Udok to power, and the war that ended his reign and his unlife. Sample characters illustrate his followers and allies, and there are tips for incorporating the Gar'Udok material into your campaign. Plus it's stuffed to overflowing with crunchy bits. Crunchy Bits: A whole pile of spells, mostly necromantic or at least related to things evil and necromantic. Some great items here for evil high priests to keep their undead armies from turning to dust at the first sign of a cleric. A dozen or so new monsters. Some of these really caught my eye - an undead medusa and an angel of death are among the piles of constructs and zombie/ghouls. All of them are well written, and the game rules look right on the money. There is even a fantastically illustrated dragon called the Cairn Wyrm in here. Plus there are a bunch of new creature templates here too, and templates are great. The highlight template is a True Mummy - a mummy variant that keeps his mind and independence, as long as he posesses his Sacred Vessels wherein are stored his brain, tongue and heart (of course, these Sacred Vessels become potent magic items in the hands of others... so it's not always easy - think of them as Clerical liches). And there is a Character Race version of the Kobold - powered up just enough to put it on par with the character races in the PHB. Prestige Classes Anam'Glac - these druid off-shoots eat the dead to gain their powers. It's pretty gruesome, very well detailed, and a good enough reason not to sell this book to children... These guys eat babies at higher levels in order to gain longevity. ICK. Teh sample character is even worse, she's a five-thousand pound woman carried on the backs of her undead legions! EWWW! Legion - undead commanders for the armies of the undead that the villains in these stories so often create. A good method of making it so a villain can control more undead than normally allowed in the 3e rules. Lotahm - Surprise! Not all the classes here are evil! The Lotahm are a psionically-inclined prestige class that bonds with their "mystic birds". A great Scout/Ranger type, and I can really see some high-elven Lotahm as messengers and defenders of elven cities. Pale Riders - Evil Cavaliers from a secret order who seek immortality. To keep up their vigil, they become skeletons at higher levels. They get a Ghoul Warhorse as a steed. Priests of Bone - clerics who worship the gods of bones (more on them later). They shrivel up, and go without food or water for long periods of time and can control larger numbers of undead, as long as they are skeletons. Prophet - another PrC for any alignment, Prophets are the personal representatives of their deities. Zombie Master - this guy made the long walk from Librum Equitis vol 1 - I guess this book was just calling his name too loudly to be ignored. New Feats - 7 new feats, 1 metamagic feat for maintaining a spell through concentration, 2 psionic (mostly for the Lotahm I suspect), and some general feats. Magic Items - some new weapon abilities, new ring, 2 staffs, and some wondrous items. Finally one new material for making weapons and armor out of - WhiteBone - magically enhanced bone (like a lot of the new materials from Magic of Faerun). Gods and Domains - 6 new deities (some of these are great, and they will fit into a lot of campaigns) as well as the domains they grant. included here are the following new domains: Bones, Disease, Greed, Insanity, Lust, Souls, Undead and Vermin. Good stuff for any evil cleric, and Greed and Lust will quickly make it over to other deities' portfolios in my book!
