so the game i DM has a gnome rogue/assassin. the party also has a fighter with a large steel shield and a belt of giant str +6.

they got the idea that since gnome is only 35 pounds and 3.5 feet tall, can they mount foot and handholds to back of shield and have rogue hide there as fighter moves into position and then strike from around the shield with sneak attack bonus. i, for one, would not expect a dagger-wielding gnome to pop out from behind a shield, specially when im concentrating on fending off the fighters attacks.

how would this impair the fighters AC? how would not being able to see the target (shield would eccentially provide total concelment until the second he peeks out) effect the rogues attack bonus? would U even bother with it at all?

what im thinking is that shield would provide no AC bonus for as long as rogue is there and rogue would have either A) 50% miss chance or B) -8 to attack

thnx N advance

if the fighter was unaware of the impending attack, i'd treat the first strike by the rogue as if he were invisible (target gets no AC bonus, attacker is +2 to hit)

from there on, if the rogue kept ducking behind the shield, i'd count it as cover, not concealment (one-half cover - "fighting from around a corner or tree", +4 AC +2 reflex save bonus)

I'd have the fighter need to make strength checks after a few rounds (DC 10 +1 per extra round, after 5 rounds) to keep the shield and gnome held up. While he's strong, 35 extra pounds held that way will be very taxing.

The gnome will have a cover bonus to is AC. The guy the gnomes attack will get a the 50% miss chance since the gnome can't see him. I'd also give the gnone a -2 or higher circumstance negative since fighting that way has to be difficult.

The fighter should get no AC bonus from his shield since he's using it this way and not for potection. You might want to give him a Circumstance penalty since fighting this was should be akward.

I disagree with you there. He knows where he will strike, and as soon as he pops his head around the corner, he will be able to see just fine.

I would grant both the gnome and the target 3/4 cover (+7 AC), but the very first attack the gnome would get +2 to hit. Also, the fighter need to be bloody strong, and can't use his shield properly (perhaps a 1/4 cover bonus (+2 AC), without the possibilty of adding a shield bonus.

What about an animated shield though people :) ?

I'd tell my players to put away their infinate improbablyility engines.

1) The gnome has to get into place without any foe's seeing him or they will surly yell, ''gnome behind the fighters shield'' which means the gnome is pretty much always on the shield

2) The gnome has to make a balance check DC 10 + the person opposing the fighter's last attack roll.

3) The gnome has a 50% miss chance.

4) Once the enemy knows the rogue is there he is going to attack the shield attempting to sunder it. As long has the opponent is intellegent.

If they are willing to put up with all of this, I'd allow it.
