Thieves' Guild Paladin

First Post
While not historically terribly realistic, I'm working out a Thieves' Guild campaign. My usual system when designing a campaign is to figure out which ruleset I'm using for character design, before I spring the idea on the players. That lets them be creative within the sandbox, so to speak.

My current plan is core 3e only and PsiHB, all players must belong to the Guild and are part of the same 'cel.' Beyond that no, restrictions.

While hammering out some possible combinations I began wondering what kind of characters couldn't fit in. I want to be inclusive, but how would a paladin be played within those confines? (Assume there's a NG or LN Thief deity).

Well, one could play paladins not as paragons of an objective goodness, but rather as champions of a particular god. The paladin then becomes the holy warrior of that faith, rather than the generic "smash evil" guy presented in the PhB.

He would live by a code that made him an exemplar of the behavior expected of the worshippers of his god, and would act as the elite strong-arm of the faith. The mundane dealings of the organization are not his concern unless they stray too far from the tenents that the god has layed out for him. If the cel started a random arson spree or didn't return the kidnap victim after getting the ransom, he would have an issue with that.

I think that an LG god would be problematic, but LN is pretty reasonable IMHO.

As an aside, you should consider Mindscapes by Mr. Cordell to enhance your Psions. The psicombat system presented is worth the purchase alone. :)

Hmm, instead of using the paladin you may want to check out the holy warrior class from The Book of the Righteous. It sounds like more of what you're looking for.

It would allow you to have a paladin-esque character that may not be all light and heroism. The class's ablilities are modified slightly for each god, and the gods are all pretty portable.

Check it out if you don't already have it.

The Holy Warrior is great. Rather than the generic paladin abilities you gain two domains (much like a cleric) that influence your paladin's gifts rather than your spells.
