I'm only listing things that I think marked a really major improvement over 1E/2E, and that 4E regressed on.
1. Unified XP progression <==> simple multiclassing <==> fun character creation
2. Every ability score gives useful boni to every character
3. Sorcerer/Wizard divide (but sorceror needed more flavor)
4. Psionics
5. Three saving throws
6. Item creation and metamagic feats
7. Useful combat feats
8. Monster summoning spells
9. Making each class a unique play experience
10. Eberron
