I agree, and have found many things that I like about it, including the simplicity. This is actually a good thing. Part of the reason for this is that it prevents the huge separation that skilled and unskilled allowed in 3E, where half the party couldn't succeed and 1 guy could, or everyone could succeed, and 1 guy can't fail. By the end, the +6 is a HUGE benefit, but not enough that someone unskilled doesn't have a chance to beat them in a contested roll (for example). If you still have an issue with this, use the Proficiency Die option from the DMG, and being trained will become slightly better (+2.5%) on average, with big swings both ways. As far as Expertise goes, you (the DM) could easily make a Feat that grants you Expertise on a single skill (or maybe two skill, but I don't want to step on the toes of the Rogue and Bard) In this edition, your character is defined by what you do, not your "build." Even identical characters (mechanically) can feel far different if roleplayed well. I've actually considered banning the regular human as OP. It really depends on your ability score method. Point Buy makes the base Human OP by giving them a HUGE bonus to all ability score. With Array, the alternate Human is very powerful, since you can make your two odd scores even and get an awesome feat. With rolling, both are strong depending on your roll. I don't find them any more powerful than the other races, just more flexible (which means you'll see more "builds" available to them).
