That ain't 3.0. Draconomicon, Dragon Magic, Races of the Dragon, etc. are all 3.5 supplements. I assume this 'silver scale' thing is from one of those three books. OP: Are you sure it's a dire owl, not a giant owl? Giant owls are relatively nice and intelligent creatures, and can be trained as mounts or the like without too much trouble, but they're rare and quite large (thus expensive). Dire owls, on the other hand, would be more vicious and much less intelligent, so tougher to train. I don't even know where you'd find dire owl stats anyway..... A dire owl would cost about 2,500 gp to train as a mount, plus whatever it costs to get a dire owl in the first place (thus, probably more expensive in total than a giant owl). This is based on the Arms & Equipment Guide's sidebar on exotic creature training costs. Also, it's likely that a dire owl (but not a giant owl) is 'ill-suited to being a mount', so the Ride skill would take a -5 penalty on any Ride checks. That's up to DM adjudication though. You need to demand that the DM take a look at his character sheet and verify where each thing on his sheet comes from. It's the DM's right, and responsibility. The new PC's total Effective Character Level should be the same or lower than the older PCs' level. So if the new PC has a Level Adjustment higher than +0, or some racial hit dice, he should have fewer class levels. And of course, if anything on the sheet is wrong, the DM has every right to remove/revoke those wrong parts and demand the character be fixed to fit the same character creation guidelines as the rest of the party's PCs. A 5th-level sorcerer should only be casting 2nd-level spells. Unless his funky race/template gives a special ability that does otherwise, he should only be able to cast Summon Monster II at most (and he should only know a few spells in total, if he's a Sorcerer; do you know what his actual class is?). Fiendish apes can only be summoned with Summon Monster III or higher, and only 1 such ape per casting (or a maximum of 3 such apes with SM IV, or a maximum of 5 such apes with SM V); all three of these are higher level than what a 5th-level Sorcerer could cast. As for summoning those and using a good-aligned spell in the same encounter: it's possible for an arcane spellcaster, unless his race or other things specifically prevent him from casting Evil spells. Sorcerers, Wizards, and Bards can cast spells of any alignment, regardless of their own alignment, but it does count as a Chaotic/Evil/Good/Lawful act, as appropriate to the alignment of the spell (so frequent casting could change his alignment at the DM's discretion, but only if the PC doesn't cast more Good-aligned spells than Evil ones). Only divine casters, like Clerics, are normally forbidden from casting spells of an opposed alignment.
