Apparently Snakes did about what horror type flicks do at this time of the year, it will be interesting to see how much drop off there is for next week. I guess hopes for Snakesmania sweeping the nation were overblown a bit.

I guess. The movie had a budget of 33 million. Making half that back in 2-3 days doesn't strike me as a bad thing.

It's like saying Clerks II bombed cause it made 10 million opening weekend. But factor in it's 5 million dollar budget and it was golden.

Which makes me wonder if they did not miss time the release and over market, I mean it was the buzz back in May, could it have had a better take if released while people were foaming at the mouth and gave too much away in clips and interviews, allowing the public to grow cold.

Which also brings up the question; was it possible that most of the internnet buzz was planted?

Did I say it bombed? :\

Let me guess, you were chucking rubber snakes at the screen the other night? ;)

There's also a difference between enjoying something for campiness on the 'net for free and popping down $9 to see a movie that you know ahead of time is going to be campy.

No, sorry if I came off that way.

What I was trying to say was sort of the opposite, which means I said it badly ;)

What I was trying to say is that a movie's opening weekend box office take has to be looked at in light of the movie's budget, not absolute dollars, to determine it's success.

So a movie like Snakes, that made about half it's budget in a few days (15 million take, 33 million budget) is the same as Superman Returns making 150 million during it's opening weekeand.

I'm sure it will make a good profit for the studio. They didn't spend much to make it and they had a ton of hype to save them money on ads. Some people were just expecting it to do better with all the 'net hype surrounding it.

Seems about right. Some movies take waaay too long to get released, with waay too much hype in between, making them prone to oversaturation. If PotC2 had come out last year (or 2 years after PotC1's release), I'd be more interested in going to see it. SoaP might've suffered from the same thing.
