I saw this weekend:
1) Factotum
2) Invincible
3) Snakes on a Plane
4) Cranked
1) Factotum is not in wide release. It's a movie based on the Bukowski book of the same name. I liked it, but I don't think it's for everyone. He's a drunken bastard getting job after job after jobe (and being fired from job after job after job) just to eek out enough money to buy his alcohol and cigarettes and writing pads, so that he can do what he really does which is write. I found it an interesting movie, stripping down humanity to it's bare bones for a single goal of getting a certain type of expiernce in life to foster good writing.
2) Invicible is good. It's a "triumph of the human spirit" type movie. I found it inspirational, and I felt good coming out of it. Probably the best of the four movies I saw.
3) Snakes on a Plane - I thought it was funny enough, but nothing special. Lots of laughs, sometimes at scenes where it was not intended to elicit laughter.
4) Crank - This was hands down one of the most silly movies I have ever seen (yes, sillier than Snakes on a Plane). I did enjoy it. But it's basically a live-action looney tunes type cartoon, done in the form of the video game Grand Theft Auto. Nothing is realistic. Everything is blown up, shot, killed, crashed, smashed, etc... You have essentially a rape scene in the middle of a crowded street that turns into a non-rape scene because the victim decides she likes it, a major crime committed every 30 seconds or so on average, you have incredibly silly medical stuff used as an excuse to give you a very shaky, very clipped, skipping, flashing, fast moving camera motion. This movie is aimed directly at 16-23 year old males. Two of my friends left saying "worst movie ever", while still somehow enjoying it. I know that seems like a contradiction, but if you see this movie you will understand.
By the way, I am really happy to see how much dough Little Miss Sunshine seems to be pulling in. Great movie.
