Wow, that was big weekend for a non holiday
One of the quotes I thought was interesting...
The movie's success depended on former and casual fans returning to the fold, and the fact that it was the Simpsons in their first movie apparently was enough. After all, the prospect of a movie has been buzzed about for a decade, and distributor 20th Century Fox's ubiquitous marketing campaign offered no compelling reason other than that it was the Simpsons in a movie. The advertising maintained the franchise's brand of manic parody and random humor, from trailers pitching it as ugly two-dimensional animation in the age of 3-D to converting 7-Eleven convenience stores into the "Qwik-E-Marts" from the show.

"I think we did a great job courting the family audience and catching fantastic reviews," said Chris Aronson, Fox's senior vice president general sales manager, who claimed the studio expected an opening in the $40 million range. "It's a multi-generational appeal picture. You have people who started watching 18 years ago. They may not watch the show anymore, but the Simpsons are beloved."

Now for a Futrama movie!

Oh numbers for Priates, which dropped out of the top 25.
Domestic: $306,483,088 32.4% + Foreign: $640,617,000 67.6% = Worldwide: $947,100,088

Spiderman also out of the top 25 but still the number 1 movie of the year (domestic)
Domestic: $335,625,539 37.8% + Foreign: $552,809,653 62.2% = Worldwide: $888,435,192

Wow, Pirates 3 is close to one BILLION dollars!

Hopefully, Transformers' success will pave the way for GI Joe, Masters of the Universe and Thundercats to take a more realistic stab at the properties. I'd love to see them.
