The Strangers did pretty well considering it's budget! $9 million and earned US$20 million for the first weekend.

Iron Man has outsold Indiana Jones? Mind you, it's still early days, but it's really doing well. Pity about Narnia - I was quite looking forward to seeing that. I still hope it does better.

Iron Man has had a stronger day-to-day average than Indiana, at this time. Indie's openning weekend was very very good and I think people held off Iron Man because of the unknowns, director and stars. I mean Robert Downey, Jr. in an action role! Plus, Iron Man had more days without a summer movie coming up, Indie is going to be hit hard in the next few weeks.

Iron Man: Opening Weekend: $98,618,668 (4,105 theaters, $24,024 average) % of Total Gross: 35.7%
Widest Release: 4,154 theaters
In Release: 31 days / 4.4 weeks

Indiana Jones: Opening Weekend: $100,137,835 (4,260 theaters, $23,506 average)
% of Total Gross: 46.4%
Widest Release: 4,264 theaters
In Release: 11 days / 1.6 weeks

Weekly Chart from May 23rd to 29th

So Iron Man is still ahead of Indy... Interestingly, both have a difference of about 50 millions between domestic and foreign revenue. I had no idea Narnia had cost so much - looks like it will have to struggle just to break even.

The execs at Paramount must be lighting cigars with 100$ bills these days... Put together, Iron Man and Indy have totalled nearly 870 millions worldwide. I wonder if they'll be able to reach one billion with those two movies?

I'm just surprised Iron Man is that popular. Spiderman and Superman, yes, but Iron Man. Is the comic this popular? Spiderman's opening weekend was something like $115M, so this isn't far off and at the time that was a record. Iron Man's really surprising me.

The comic isn't that popular, sure it has survived years but it isn't one of the big boys. It surprised me because it was a good movie and wasn't a comic book movie. I stay away from comic book movies in general (I still haven't seen any of the Spiderman or X-men movies) but I saw Iron Man because it looked different. When I saw it it felt different as well. It felt much more like an action movie with sci-fi elements than a superhero movie. I think this might be why it did so well, it is able to capture more of a crossover market.
