For the sake of the argument, I generally take a position that is more extreme than what my own, off-the-cuff position really is. Basically, I take one facet of my opinion and blow it up into a column. I'm afraid I came across like a militant anti-smoker which isn't exactly where my heart is. On our editorial board, I pretty much suggested a bar/private club compromise, which is what the city finally came up with (I was the only one on the board who thought that way, mind you.) But man, I do hate the argument that people have a RIGHT to pollute the air I am breathing. Really, so far, I have had it better than my co-columnist. When we came up with this idea, she thought she was some kind of hard-core conservative (to offset my flaming liberalism) yet she has had to struggle to take the conservative stance on some of the issues we have written about. Although on my Ten Commandments column, I really was pretty much shooting from the hip. One lady kindly pointed out that I was an idiot and doomed to hell, but other than that...</blockquote>
