Hey, keep in mind that I am only a RPG customer (and not even a heavy buyer), 1 in a 20millions or so, therefore that's how little my opinion is worth on this. You can count it's an honest opinion, but let's hope the other 19.999.999 disagree ;) I am not a fan of "different for the sake of being different" either. In fact, I get irritated when a whole D&D edition gets carried away by that way of thinking. Speaking for myself, I can tell you that I see literally hundreds of RPGs (systems) and fantasy settings (usually tied to a D&D edition, or another system). So how do I decide I'm going to buy a new one? The problem is, a lot of those systems are solid and reliable design, and a lot of those settings are rich and detailed... eventually, they have to make a difference in my way of playing the game. They have to add some diversity to what I can already do with what I have. My favourite fantasy settings are Forgotten Realms, Rokugan and Planescape. These cover my needs for "classic", "oriental " and "weird". At which point, it really doesn't matter much to me if Greyhawk, Kalamar or Orea are just as good or even better, unless they are massively better, I would just ask myself why would I want something that is so similar to a fantasy setting I am already using. I'd rather give a shot at something significantly different, or go homebrew for the fun of designing it myself. Anyway, here my comment was only on the magic item samples. There is no doubt that they are solid design. My negative reaction was because I pictured myself browsing a book "Orea Magic Items Compendium" at the FLGS and reading these, pondering whether I should buy this book or not, and I couldn't find a reason to do so because they gave me a feeling like "I already have this stuff". Of course magic items are just a small part of a RPG, and you said these would be just a chapter in your DMG. I shouldn't judge your work only from a few samples of a single chapter! After all, your RPG and setting might end up giving me the diversity I want, even if the part about magic items happened to be totally conservative. My bottom line is, that (speaking only for myself) I want a convincing reason that I need to buy a new RPG or fantasy setting, because it will significantly expand my gaming experience. One innovation, one added value, one specialty, or a huge inspiration. Believe me, this is the same reason why I criticize and shun a powerhouse such as 13th Age :D Thankfully, I am not a typical gamer and I am a small buyer, so there's a good chance your project will be successful after all, which obviously I wish you all the best of luck!
