Three Questions:

Tuzenbach

First Post
1. Which book(s) contain the Arcane Trickster and Mystic Theurge?

2. Is it possible for a multi-class character to have multiple Prestige Classes?

3. Has anyone figured out what the best combo would be for a Warlock multi-class character?

Thanks!

1. Both are in the DMG

2. Yep. Nothing in the rules against it, though its best to check with your DM with ANY PrC questions on what's allowed and what's not.

3. Um. Dunno on this one. Haven't really given it that much look just yet.

As far as the first two questions, Ankh-Morpork Guard hits it on the nose.

As for question 3... right now, given the inconsistencies of Customer Service at WoTC, the warlock evidently doesn't qualify for many of the prestige classes touted as able to be taken by the warlock. Out of them all, I think the list has been pared down to two (the Acolyte of the Skin and the Suel Arcanamach) because of the errant insanity that seems to be plaguing them in their attempts to cold-iron nerf-bat the warlock into a sub-par variant class that a DM wouldn't even want to put some poor NPC villain into, not to mention the slip-shod editing job that seems to have been done on Complete Arcane. Then again, I'm starting a first-level human warlock, and I'm not paying a bit of attention to the "rulings" of CustServ. As one person elsewhere pointed out, these are the people who argued for two months that the halfling outrider's BAB didn't progress because it wasn't printed in Sword & Fist.

Thanks! But actually, I wasn't referring to the Warlock's "Prestige Class" options, rather which other core class would be most advantageous to add to that of the Warlock should the Warlock choose to multi-class. Ya' know, like Fighter/Rogue/Warlock, Psion/Warlock, Monk/Warlock, Ranger/Warlock, etc.

Ah, I misinterpreted. My apologies.

Out of the other core classes... I couldn't really say. Probably fighter, although ranger might not be too bad either, especially if you choose the archery tree on the weapon style choices... that'll only help your eldritch blast to hit more accurately.

Prestige classes (since I did think of a very nice possibility)... there's a lot. The obvious one to me (assuming you're evil) is, of course, the blackguard. Sure, I'll take Dark Blessing and use my Cha modifier to help ALL my saves, rather than the "Dark One's Own Luck" invocation (which only works for one of the three saves, whether Fortitude, Reflex or Will). Never mind the benefits of sneak attack damage (which should stack with your eldritch blast damage within 30 feet, since there's rules on sneak attacks with spells as a rogue/caster, depending on your "spellcasting" class), proficiency with all martial weapons, proficient with all armor (which makes the Battle Caster feat all the more attractive, so that your warlock/blackguard can use medium armor with no arcane spell failure... hmm, perhaps someone should see about taking Battle Caster twice and seeing if it stacks... :])... and the list goes on...

You know, I might just do a warlock/blackguard sometime (although I'll wait until I get to epic levels before going blackguard, because I want all the invocations I can get). *evil grin*

One thing puzzles me about the Battle Caster feat. As I understand it, you go up one armour category for the purposes of avoiding arcane spell failure, so a warlock with the feat gets zero failure in medium armour, whereas previously it was just for light armour.

But what happens with PrCs like the Spellsword, who get a % reduction of their failure chance - do you just take the best result, seeing there's no obvious way of getting the two effects to stack?

Edit: Having thought about it, I suppose that you're fine as long you stick with armour covered by the feat. If you go for heavier armour, the feat wouldn't count, but you would then get your Spellsword reduction. That seems to make sense.

A1.
3.0: Tome and Blood contains the Arcane Trickster; Mystic Theurge is not in the rule base.

3.5: Arcane Trickster and Mystic Theurge are both in the DMG and SRD.

A2.
What they said; but many GM's feel that this is unrealistic and only allow a limited number (typically 1). Check first.

A3.
Any of the non-spellcasting base-classes should work just fine. The fighter will boost your raw combat power, with good BAB and bonus feats. The rogue will add skills and sneak attack (which can be used with the Warlock's blast). The barbarian is probably not quite as good a choice as the fighter (since it doesn't get the bonus feats), but would still prove interesting. The monk would also be interesting, but only if your GM allows the monk free multi-classing.

The spellcasting classes will lose too much, since they'll be giving up spell levels with no offsetting synergy.

I wonder, could either the Necromancer core class (I'm sure someone has one somewhere) or PrC be combined with the Warlock (in a multi-class scenario) toward advantageous effect? I've been told by more than one person that Necromancers are "weak". Perhaps combined with the Warlock, a semi-powerful character may be the result.
