It seems like @tomedunn has other things to do, but I was fiddling around with some formulas and hit something awesome. Take their formula: Change the "-2" to "-1" and it works for every single one of my 45 sample basic monsters.* None of the other formulas I've tried do that. Now, the next step from here (since trying to figure out exactly what's going on in that math derivation is beyond my skills), is to test it with the most straightforward rules for adjusting HP, AC, AB, and DPR, that show up in both the DMG and the spreadsheet Mike Mearls ( @mearls ) was using in the videos. (Remember, we're trying to figure out what equation the official Monster CR Calculator is using). To do it properly, I'll need to isolate variables. So I'll try to find monsters that are "basic" except that they have one complicating variable only. (I'll likely start with saving throw bonuses.) If one of those variables works, then I can test it with another, and another. If the individual elements check out, then I can test monsters that have more than one of them, etc. While I'm doing this, I'll keep the other formulas in the spreadsheet to, so if things don't work out while following this one, I can potentially identify patterns. I may not get to this until April, but that's what's next. * Basic monsters being the ones that have no other variables that should matter (and I'm being very conservative and imagining something not mentioned in the DMG or on the spreadsheet entry still might matter in some eldritch way). I'm not counting the camel, mule, and merfolk, which almost certainly get mis-categorized by my spreadsheet because the formula needs to be set to treat XP over 5 as CR 1/8 (rather than XP over 10), and then they work with any formula. Although, this formula actually makes one of those (merfolk) work with either XP cut-off!
