Legend
I just bought a bunch of old WOTC minis to compare and the plastic is cheaper, the paint apps are far fewer, usually three to four colors with low detail. The Wizkids minis... I am loathe to admit, are getting a lot better and the blind boxes are a fair deal. The painting appears to be tampographed so higher detailed than hand factory painted.
I bought them all along, and have about 95% of what was released. They varied highly in quality.

The plastic early on was softer, so the figures tend to wilt in heat a bit, but can be reset. However, my box of minis that have snapped and put aside for repairs is almost all stuff from the last 5 years. The old stuff bends. The new stuff breaks.

The cost to apply paint has changed in several ways, but as you note we can automate and do higher quality for less human effort. The cost of materials and labor has increased - but not by as much as they are charging.
