As the old saying goes: random, cheap, prepainted - choose two. Back in the day, I used to have a Waldenbooks that would give you coupons based on purchases (I think it was a $10/$1 rate), and they often had double/triple days. Needless to say, my D&D book purchases paid for a lot of those DDM boosters! And for the first couple of set, most of those minis were horrible (I'm looking at you Corn-fed Farmer with Scythe). As time passed, they first started reducing the number of minis per set, then started jumping the prices, then quit altogether. I was happy when Wizkids started to produce them, but with each set the prices are climbing and getting more outrageous as they try in many cases to milk the nostalgia outta these things. If I hadn't bought into so many plastic minis over the years, I think I'd have gone with the acrylic standees that have come out of late. Easier storage, at the least.
