Actually, I disliked that part of the movie- it seemed pretty weak to me that he could pick up the language by merely listening.

The book is very good though, and one of the few Crichton novels that read well through out its whole.

Haven't read the book, I'll have to do so.

I see your point on the learning by listening aspect - he certainly should be able to understand them by listening, but speaking the language really ought to take some practice. But I was impressed by the acting and direction in that scene, so I didn't think about it. They took a mundane obstacle to the plot, a language barrier, and made it into something interesting.
