D&D 5E Tips, hints, and suggestions for running 5E via tinychat or Google Hangouts (no video or audio dear god no!)

I have a few players eager to get started on my campaign. They have characters and motives, some stats, and a few hooks to get them started.

Years ago, I ran a game via IRC, and I loved that. I know that 5E can be run without a battlemat or minis, so I'm wondering how people who run text-based virtual campaigns have done it, what worked for them, what didn't, etc.

A Roll20 campaign can be launched inside of hangouts and that would give you all the dice rolling and space for maps you would need. Plenty of groups on roll20 are text based it is not my thing but all the tools are there, even if you don't use battlemaps it is nice to have a whiteboard and drawing tools and the ability to keep handouts and things sorted.

I like roll20. Its free. I just stick up a photo of something (google a picture of a street, for example) and dump pog pictures (sometimes) to show what's there.

Oh, sweeeeet!

Roll20 is incredible. It single-handedly allows me to pursue this hobby despite living far off the beaten path.

My advice? Use voice audio for out of character chat--it'll help tremendously with the pace of the game.
