Hmm, I was thinking this is the third time he's modified the OT. Also Lucas wrote and produced Willow, though he didn't direct it. He may not reap profit like he did with his one-hit wonder, but he's still a filmmaker. The dude just have to go back to his basic root. I mean, it's great that he created ILM so that every filmmakers and studios can benefit from the service of great special effects and latest cinema technology, but what good is these hi-tech tools if you don't know the basics of fimmaking?
Financial: Adjusted for Inflation, Star Wars ep 4 is the second most successful movie of all time, behind only Gone with the Wind. The other OT movies are all in the top 50 highest grossing movies ever made. Meanwhile of the Prequels, only Episode 1 even makes that list, and it's production cost is more than 1/5th of it's take, it being close to the bottom. Critical: On the IMDB fan listing ANH ranks #10 of the most popular movies of all time, while Empire comes in #11. Meanwhile of the Prequels, the most popular is Revenge which pulls in an "impressive" #238. The other prequel movies are even more dismal, not finding their way onto the top 250 at all. The PT had it's successes to be sure. They're well above the average for movies, but they'll never achieve the sort of financial and critical success that the OT did. Thus my guesswork that Lucas would rather tinker with his huge success than go on with other mediocre-success things. He produced several things since Star Wars such as the aforementioned Willow, Howard the Duck, Land before Time, and a few others. Nor can you have it both ways, he can't have both waited for decades and be prone to folding under pressure like a wet napkin. There was outcry for more Star Wars movies about ten minutes after ROTJ was released. You cannot blame the Fans for the producer's decisions. Right now he's working on Indiana Jones 4. Apparently, he wants to try to cash in on yet another established franchise rather than try to build up a new legend. It's understandable, under the circumstances.
