If I were a low level character, I would take the Feat over the 5,000 experience points, believe it or not. IC, it makes low level characters more capable, more empowered. OOC, your character can stick to low level adventuring groups, gain Feats, and not have to take on ever more powerful opponents to gain experience points. Your low level character becomes capable of doing more things, which in my experience leads to more fun in playing the character (that doesn't mean he has to be superpowerful to be fun ... that means an extra Feat or two simply gives him some extra pizazz.) Gaining a Wish out of an archmage or archmagistress is difficult, but not impossible. It's simply a matter of finding an archmage or archmagistress, gaining entry into his or her estate when you weren't invitated and nobody there knows you, talking the archmage or archmagistress into spending time talking to you, convincing the archmage or archmagistress that you deserve the Feat, then convincing the archmage or archmagistress to burn 5,000 experience points to help you. It's not like it's actually that difficult a thing to accomplish. :) If your character is an archmage or archmagistress, you've got it made, if you go by the 5,000 experience point Home Rule. Want a Feat? BAM, you've got one. Want another Feat? BAM, you've got one. Want another Feat yet? BAM, you've got one. Now, you are 1 level lower than you were. You go on an adventure, defeat the baddies (with the extra THREE Feats to help you!) and level right back up to where you were. Then, you repeat the procedure! Of course, in such a scenario, every low level adventurer around will be coming to your door for your Wishes, to obtain their own Feats. Scene: Party is in wilderness. Middle of night, 2nd watch. There is a movement in the bushes. The person on watch calls out for the party to awaken. The suspicious rustle continues. The party aims all their firepower that way. A man walks out, and says: Mr. Wizard, could I please have a Wish spell, so I can gain (IC version of Feat) Result: Party tells man to leave, goes back to sleep. One hour later: suspicious movement in bushes. Second man walks out, and speaks: May I have a Wish? I need to have the ability to (IC version of Feat.) Result: Party STERNLY orders second man to leave, goes back to sleep. One hour later: suspicious movement in bushes. Result: Party barbarian didn't get any sleep. Goes berserk. Tears bushes apart. Third man runs away, and party holds barbarian back from chasing him down and killing him. One hour later: suspicious movement in other bushes ...
