Today I learned that I can successfully change a laptop screen. Like a pillock I picked my laptop with a thumb on the screen two weeks ago and cracked it right down the middle. It was basically unusable and it’s quite a nice laptop so I was pretty annoyed but my own fault. I have a plug in monitor so I could still run my online games but it was bloody annoying and could use it on my actual lap. I took it straight to the best rated computer repair shop in my town (not saying much) where N old geyser who didn’t inspire a lot of confidence said it would cost me £140 plus parts, it would take two weeks because of holidays and he’d need to keep the laptop because he needs the screen model from the back to order it and ‘taking apart and re-gluing’ was ‘labor intensive’ work. Something seemed off. Now I’m not a techy guy. It’s not my forte. A gaming friend even chose the damn thing for me. Though I went on YouTube watched a video, took the frame off the screen, lifted the screen off. Found the code. Ordered the replacement from LaptopSpares for £45. It arrived three working days later and I switched them over. It was completely black at first but I checked the internet again and it said to do a video driver reboot then a power reset. Lo and behold it worked and a beautiful new screen is perfectly fitted back in. I’m not sure why I didn’t trust the guy in the shop. There were probably many things that could have gone wrong. Plus I never would have known to check the back of the screen for the model number had he not said. Although any goodwill I would have felt was wiped out by him trying to charge me £140 for fifteen minutes work. So I guess I also learned not to go back to that repair shop.
