On your 'diversify your encounters' note, I had a bittersweet version of that yesterday when I had the climax of the campaign I've been running for a year. The short short version is that the priest queen villain was trying to bring Noah's ark to her ziggurat so she could draw upon the power of God Himself, but the boat was going down a river past a separate city, and the party had worked to get allies there to stop her. So I queued up all sorts of monsters that would be on this ark, plus bodyguards and lower-ranking priests and even an angel that the queen had enthralled. And because the party wanted to do some politicking and scheming, and I had a hard limit that this had to be the last session (because of vacation timing), when the climactic encounter was about to kick off, it was already 10:45pm. So to wrap it up before some of the parents in the room fell asleep, I switched to narrative mode, and resolved each clash in the fight with asking the player what they were doing, then having them roll a die, and narrating how it turned out. I think it still worked well enough, and with enough time we'll remember the story beats more than we would have remembered individual attacks and such. But still, I'm little bummed. How many more sessions do you have, do you think?
