Historically, many very smart people were also very intolerant.

I mean, lack of education and/or lesser cultural exposure to the world at large can definitely be contributing factors to one's intolerance, but it's not an absolute.

Honestly, tge more educated or at least informed about certain movements, groups, etc the less I'm able to tolerate them. This goes for extremists on both sides of some spectrums.

One thing I try to remind people of is to not to equate intolerance with stupidity. Doing so increases your odds of underestimating them.
