Tongue in Cheek Occult Mysteries

Labmonkey-XL

First Post
So I decided for halloween to run a d20 Modern scenario where the PCs work for an Eccentric Private Detective whos focus is on the Occult.

Some job occupations for the PCs are:
*Gambler
*B-Movie Actor
*Conspiracy Theorist
*Tabloid Jounalist
*Porn Star
*Occultist

The reason why its an eclectic mix of occupations is because the supporting cast of NPCs are far more stranger. Paranoid/delusional nutjobs who claim to live in haunted houses, suffer constant misfortune with imps, and even one NPC who thinks he's the reincarnation of Judas Iscariot.

Its suppose to be an over the top Murder/Mystery Conspiracy type game mixed with plenty of satire.

Any ideas for some over the top antagonists, or plot hooks?

There are things man was never meant to know.

Things so old that the stars themselves were born within remembrance.

To know even the most infintesimal mote of the knowledge that lies within their alien intellect is to invite ... nay, embrace ... insanity of the most debilitating sort.

Their blasphemous, bloodshot eye has settled upon one man ... one individual.

Their squamous, pulsating limbs snake forth from the depths of time and space ... searching ... reaching ... yearning.

For his Pabst Blue Ribbon.

Why? What are their ends? Why do The Nameless Ones thirst for cheap beer?

No one knows.

But he'd sure like them to stop sniping all his damn brewskies.

And to quit leaving the cans crumpled on the kitchen counter.

I highly recommend checking out old pulp serials for strange occult motivations. Stuff like indiana jones makes good inspiration as well.

One staple of the occult is that they always seem to be seeking lost relics to bring forth the end of the world, resurrect a dark god, etc.

Second staple of the occult is that they always like to have giant temples in the strangest of places. Deep jungles of south america, middle of nowhere central africa, on some strange island away from shipping routes. infiltrating the temple is a movie normal.

Third staple of the occult, is that they are always conducting the ritual AT the temple, at the appropriate time the hero shows up. They never do this without warning, they let MANY clues so that people know when they're going to perform this ritual. Rituals seem to be set at signature times (full moons, witching hour, etc).

Fourth staple of the occult, is that there's always shadow agents in the real world doing things to help the occult. The banker is really a high priest, looking to recruit new members. The friendly grocer kills goats at midnight. During the day they are normal, but at night their allegiance to the occult changes them into a different personality that they are withing the group.

Surely others will come out with more. Look to Dark Matter for some inspiration....as well as BLood and Relics.
