I highly recommend checking out old pulp serials for strange occult motivations. Stuff like indiana jones makes good inspiration as well. One staple of the occult is that they always seem to be seeking lost relics to bring forth the end of the world, resurrect a dark god, etc. Second staple of the occult is that they always like to have giant temples in the strangest of places. Deep jungles of south america, middle of nowhere central africa, on some strange island away from shipping routes. infiltrating the temple is a movie normal. Third staple of the occult, is that they are always conducting the ritual AT the temple, at the appropriate time the hero shows up. They never do this without warning, they let MANY clues so that people know when they're going to perform this ritual. Rituals seem to be set at signature times (full moons, witching hour, etc). Fourth staple of the occult, is that there's always shadow agents in the real world doing things to help the occult. The banker is really a high priest, looking to recruit new members. The friendly grocer kills goats at midnight. During the day they are normal, but at night their allegiance to the occult changes them into a different personality that they are withing the group. Surely others will come out with more. Look to Dark Matter for some inspiration....as well as BLood and Relics.
