Normal function will generally result in the appliance rubbing against the teeth at some stage or other, potentially causing problems. Habits with the tongue make things worse.With regards to gum problems, have to admit, haven't seen too much of this problem with tongue piercings. Lips piercings seem to be a greater problem. Because the lip piercings constantly sit around the level of the gums of the lower teeth, we tend to find the constant pressure or rubbing of the piercing on the gums causes the gum to retreat down the tooth.
