In the interest of contributing something I have decided to start posting the monsters for my new campaign "Homeland" that I am going to start running soon. As mentioned in a previous post, the game focuses on how much adventure a party can find close to home and takes palce is an expansive post-glacial valley, about the size of the state of Oregon with a very rustic, unsettled feel. This place is called the Valley of Baryn. Many of my new monsters actually take the forms of fantastic flora and fauna. These are not so much monsters as they are the local "normal" animals. So, first off for consideration are... Gulmer (Army Squirrel) Tiny Animal (swarm) Hit Dice: 12d10+24 (90hp) Initiative: +4 Speed: 40ft., climb 40ft Armor Class: 15 (+4 Dex, +2 natural), touch 13, flat-footed 11 Base Attack/Grapple: +12/- Attack: swarm Full Attack: swarm Damage: swarm 3D6 Space/Reach: 5ft./5ft. Special Attacks: Distraction (DC 20) Special Qualities: Low-light vision, swarm traits. Saves: Fort +6, Ref +13, Will +5 Abilities: Str 2, Dex 18, Con 14, Int 1, Wis 12, Cha 9 Skills: - Feats: - Environment: Temperate woodlands Organization: Swarm Challenge Rating: ? Treasure: - Alignment: Neutral Advancement: - The forest around you vibrates with the chattering and high-pitched barking of the scores of bristle-haired squirrels surrounding you on every limb and branch. As the scream in unison a barrage of hard-shelled nuts and stones begin to hail down upon you. Living in colonies in large tress and tangles hollows in ancient forests, the Gulmer are a race of ferociously territorial, ravenous squirrels who have adapted to living in large colonies. Gulmer are larger than most squirrels, red in color and possessed of a wicked set of rodent teeth which they use for both chewing and to delivery wicked bites. Gulmer spend almost all their waking hours scouring the woodlands surrounding their nest for anything and everything that is edible. Nuts, fruits, berries, edible bark, roots, tubers, bulbs, even small animals and insects are stripped away in an ever increasing radius around the large tree or tangle that the Gulmer use as home. When they have exhausted the area around their nest, they move on, making sure to find a new nest far enough away so as to not overlap any previously ravaged area. During these migrations from one nest to another, Gulmer are particularly aggressive, jumpy and ever on guard for danger, sometimes conducting preemptive strikes against large creatures they perceive and potential threats. Combat: Gulmer fight as a group, using numbers to overwhelm those who threaten the sanctity of their communal nest or the swarming Gulmer as they go about their daily work. To keep their enemies off guard, Gulmer swarms will utilize whatever small objects they have on hand to rain down a storm of painful, though mostly harmless projectile on their assailants. In addition, the many plant toxins that have built up into their systems, allow Gulmer to spray a stinging, burning musk that can cause serious pain and sizable welts to exposed skin. All of this can have quite an effect on an enemy’s resolve. To fight they use sharp gnawing teeth and climbing claws.
