For some reason Enworld is not on this list anymore. . .

Got bored with having to re-add myself every time they lost the data every couple of weeks. And it's not like the extra 900 or so hits a month from there exactly make a difference. :)

That's sad! :( Sorry, but I have to disagree with you that it doesn't make a difference, Morrus.

ENworld has always been the "Top DnD 3E Site", and we all take pride in that fact. Like it or not, rpgtopsites is the only semi-official measure we have of that.

This hobby is already insular enough that we don't need to cut ourselves off from the broader fan base. You may only be getting 900 hits a month directly from the poll site, but how many people have discovered ENworld because of it? At last count, they've got 69 sites in the poll. That's 69 little communities of DnD fans. Probably all of which at some point will check out who their #1 competitor is, and perhaps stay on to share in the larger ENworld community.

Please don't just let this slide!

69 little communities of people wwho in all likelihood already visit ENWorld. These voting sites have always struck me as an exercise in futility, especially when the people in the running are out spamming for votes everywhere, encouraging people to vote over and over, and vote for more than one site. To me, directories like ENWorld or D20sites.com are far more useful in finding a new d20/D&D site to explore.

I think it's a safe bet that of the 900 hits Morrus qouted getting from that site (and I'm assuming he means that was their origin when this site generates backwards linking statistics) a solid 7 or 8 hundred of those are people who are already regulars here, in fact, I have a theory: Say Morrus posts an announcement on the news page saying "Hey, I added ENWorld to the voting site again, go vote for us." So, wanting to help out the site, I follow his link, and go vote. Then what? I probably want to read the rest of the D20 news on ENWorld, so I backbutton or link right back to this site, voila! the voting site just gave ENWorld a hit! I'm convinced this accounted for a lot of the traffic that site gave ENWorld.

And anyway, like Morrus said, 900 hits a month isn't jack to a site that has ~3000 registered users and is probably getting upwards of 10,000 hits a day. Regardless of quality, those other sites are small beans compared to ENWorld and Wizards.com. ENWorld is probably approaching saturation level (in terms of the people that are online now that would want to come here probably already know about the site, the influx of new gamers or net users aside) It becomes even more of an exercise in futility now for ENWorld, because the outdated traffic building tools no longer noticeably increase visits to this site. Now, if it's fun, and not too much hassle, then yeah, be a "team player" and join in with all the other sites for a goodnatured popularity contest, but if, as Morrus said, it gets to be a pain, well, I'm sure running the site itself is hassle enough, why ask him to keep another burden when the effort isn't justified by the payoff?
