Torben, A gnome I never played.....

This a character I made for an upcoming, but I ended up DMing, still I'm hoping to use him as my chatacter afterwards!

Personal Information: Torben grew up in High dale in the secluded hidden dale, on birth his birth pet was a raccoon called Çade, which he keeps with him although Torben is 60 years old. When he graduated he trained with his mother to develop his ranger skills, but he couldn’t develop his two weapon fighting skills, but his Archery developed well, but puts it down his certification present, his composite short bow. However his graduation test was to determine whether or not the local wyvern were of greater intelligence then the normal sort, he put a slab of meat on a grappling hook, secured to the ground; a normal wyvern would have taken away the meat, still chained on to the cliff face. It took the meat off the hook, but
dived back down and knocked Torben off. When he reached the ground he fell on top of a rotting human wizard, a spell had stopped the Wyverns from eating it and now it was to rotten to eat, he still suffers from seplophobia.

In combat: Torben likes to use his bow to its fullest potential, and then go in with his gnomish battle pick. If he is required to use a smaller weapon, he will draw his short sword.

Miscellaneous: Two earrings in his right ear and 1 in his left, Ten kilos of junk(In back pack), Travellers outfit, Bed roll(on top of back pack rolled up), Grappling hook(Belt), Bullseye lantern.

Çade

Raccoon

Çade has been with Torben all her life and knows him like the back of her paw, and even though she isn’t his familiar or animal companion, she can tell what he wants her to do quite well. She is quite mischievous, but compared she keeps Torben check.

Çade weighs 13 pounds, and she is 2 and ¾ feet.

COMBAT
Raccoons attack with their forepaws and teeth.

Slow Fall (Ex): A raccoon that is within forepaw's reach of a solid surface (wall, tree, etc) can use the surface to slow its descent. The raccoon takes damage as if the fall were 30 feet shorter that it actually is.

Skills: Raccoons receive a +4 racial bonus to Listen and Spot checks.

What I want is advice, help and questions.

{edit: I reposted this cause I posted too much in the other thread, and I didn't want you to have to wade through the crud, and know it has more. Oh and we need bump buttons like on the BI boards!}

sure!

since you got stuck being the DM, i think you should have Torben pop up in your game all the time! if you really want to play him, he could help/guide/save/give information to the PCs every time they turn around!

could you post the Night Owl feat (and what NBOF means)?

no offense Ferret, but Torben's background is a little hard to understand. what would an intelligent wyvern done with the meat? what did Torben get knocked off of? what does a dead wizard have to do with this? (or was that to give Torben a personality quirk?)

do raccoons really have slow fall? (i saw that and thought Cade: Raccoon Monk )

I'd rather keep him for my turns as a PC, but nice idea.

Night owl means(and I fliped between that one and light sleeper)

LIGHT SLEEPER [General]
COPYRIGHT 2001, Carl Cramér
You wake up easily.
Benefit: You can make listen rolls even while asleep. On a
successful roll, you wake up. You also fall asleep easily, so
you still get your rest even if you wake up several times per
night.

NIGHT OWL [General, Trait]
COPYRIGHT 2001, Eric D. Harry
A benefit to any adventurer, you only need a minimal
amount of sleep to stay active and alert.
Benefit: You only need half the usual amount of sleep or
trance (based on your race) to awaken fully refreshed and
recovered from fatigue penalties.
Normal: Without this feat you require 8 hours of sleep (4
hours of trance if an elf) to awaken refreshed.
Special: Like elven spellcasters, you still need 8 hours of
restful calm in order to prepare spells even if you have a
lesser sleep or trance requirement to stay refreshed.

Straight from the book.
(I might take Pack mule instead:

PACK MULE [General]
COPYRIGHT 2000, Bradley H. Bemis Jr.
Folks can now carry just a wee bit more by knowing how to
balance a pack.
Benefit: You can carry weight (encumbrance) as if your
Strength were two points higher.)

If your wonderingwhere they came from:High dale, but they areterribly smart, just more then average, they would still be hungry, they might off thought torben was going to capture him, and that wizard? Bad luck, I really made it up on the fly.

Oh and the Slow fall? I didn't make raccoons.

If you think I'm asking what to do with him, I wan't too know how to improve him.

First thing he should have 11 hit points. According to the DMG all 1st level hit points are maximum. This will help him survive a bit better

Also his skills are off. Pick pockets is not a ranger class skill

Instead I would suggest taking (these include bonus points for stats)

Move silent 5
Hide 5
Wilderness Lore 6
Spot 4
Search 4
Listen 4
Climbing 3
Pick pocket 4

Also he has Tracking as a bonus feat.

You will also have some cantrips

) dancing lights, ghost sound, and prestidigitation. The last one will come in handy for you. Just remember they have about a 20% spell failure rate

If your GM allows it I would suggest the Cosmopolitan Feat from Foprgotten realms as your level 1 feat

It gives you one skill (in this case pickpocket) as a class skill and at a bonus of +2

If your GM says OK your pick pockets goes up to 6 and with a point shift your climbing goes to 4

Otherwise a decent and interesting character
