@Faolyn recently expressed a desire for rules for crunchier hunting and gathering, and I wanted to start a conversation about how this could be worked into the rules in ways that doesn’t overrule the existing mechanics. Central to my initial thoughts are the following facts from the published rules:

A success on Hunting and Gathering generates 1 Supply.
A critical success on Hunting and Gathering generates twice as many Supply as a success.
Level 1 rangers generate twice as many supply when Hunting and Gathering as a normal person.
The additional points are assumptions that we might make as useful guidelines.

The average success rate for modern deer hunters using bows and arrows is 8-10%.
The hunters studied above are all level 1 rangers.
The hunters studied above are hunting in a Tier 0 tangled forest (where they have advantage on checks to hunt and gather).
The hunters studied above used standard array for their stats and the O5e quick build of the ranger, making DEX their highest stat at 16, followed by WIS at 14 (after adding A5e background bonuses to their ability scores to round out odd numbers).
The hunters studied above are all proficient in survival
A deer yields about 1/3 of its weight in rations.
With these facts and assumptions in mind, our example hunter with a +4 to Wisdom (Survival) checks has a 75% chance of passing the DC 10 Survival check necessary to gain 2 Supply per day before factoring in advantage. With advantage, it bumps up to 93.75%. As it happens, in order to give our hunter around 10% odds of snagging a deer on a single day, the DC needs to be at least 24, which implies that they only successfully kill a deer on a Critical Success. A medium deer, weighing around 150 lbs, gives us about 50 lbs of rations, which amounts to 25 Supply (AG 329). A non-ranger on a non-critical success should only generate about 6 Supply for the same DC. This is far from a complete system, but it might form a basis for further developments.
