Training Guard animals

I have just bought a manor in a large city. I want to have two panthers to guard the residence. How would you go about training the animals would I pay someone else? How much, and what would they understand?

Check the Handle Animal skill (pg.74-5 of the 3.5 PHB). It gives a fairly detailed coverage of exactly how long it takes to train an animal (or wild animal, in your case), what it can be taught, etc.
