Training peasants to fight

I've done stuff like this several times.

1) Attack on the Keep on the Borderlands by a force from the Caves of Chaos -- bandits, cultists, zombies, and skeletons.

The PC's didn't train the Keep's forces, but they fought alongside them, and we played all of it out -- every attack back and forth -- with a lot of d20's in AD&D rules.

2) Attack on a village by a force of orcs and werewolves. Only one PC managed to ride there (with Horseshoes of Speed) in time to intervene, but he turned the tide of battle (he was 8th level and had silver +1 crossbow bolts).

Again, the PC's didn't train them, but there were an organized village militia, using normal 3.5e rules for the classes and levels for a settlement of that size, minus the Warriors were off at the local tower. The PC's set up ("off screen") what equipment the villagers had, with a budget, IIRC, of 2 gp per head. That meant most people had a spear and two javelins, I believe, but the Experts had Leather Armor, swords, and light crossbows. The village headman had chainmail.

3) Attack by the remaining force of orcs and werewolves on the tower. Many villagers were sheltering inside. The PC's did most of the fighting, but the tower militia (War1 grunts with War2 or War3 leaders, and one F4 captain) helped a bit with light crossbow fire.

The werewolves were heavily defeated.

4) PC's recently trained a lacklustre militia force who were guarding a road checkpoint. We didn't play it out in detail, and I don't know what the statistical change would be. I guess Com1 to War1.
