Treasure Generator Ideas/Discussion

TheOverlord

First Post
Treasure Generator / Magic Item Generator Development has begun! It will be another addition to the Monster Advancer Toolset and I figured I would go straight to the people before I got too far.

What features would make an online treasure generator exceptional?
What generators do people use right now that I should make sure to look at?

I am already under way and have a lot of new ideas, but I wanted to get feedback and hear the people's voice. Brain storming always works a lot better with more people involved.

Finished?

Is the Monster Advancer finished? I didn't think it was. If not, my suggestion would be to finish one thing before starting another...

Ogrork, I cannot deny the wisdom of your words. My plan is not to stray too far. I just needed a break. A lot of the things I am working on on the core advancer can get a bit tedious (data entry, data correction, data cleanup) or require larger blocks of time(UI redesign for a better flow, incorporation of a system to allow others to help adjust/submit creatures, better handling of NPC generation. These larger blocks are hard to come by as I just had the first addition to my family) and the programmer in me was looking for a bit of fresh development that could be worked on in patchy blocks of time (as I already had all the magic items in database form). It is a temporary distraction at best. There is not even enough there to be called a side-project. Fear not. My primary focus is definitely still getting the advancer up to my extremely high standards. Besides, getting even bare-bones interaction with people on these forums that are interested in such things energizes me to keep getting work done on the Advancer.

The fact that you even care about me finishing the Advancer encourages me to keep plugging away.

I am a new DM and i have used you generator to salvage the free flowing sense of my game world when my characters went in a direction i didnt prepare for. They didn't even really notice cause I was able to get it all set up during a bathroom break and the fight lasted long enough for me to call it a night afterward and gave me a whole week to write for the characters new direction.

If doing a Item generator make sure to include lots of filters, I know as a player i hate rolling up items from the MIC that are incarnum or psionic based when our DM doesn't use those systems in his game otherwise. I have been trying to convince him to let us reroll those items but he is content to let us pawn them off at half value. I feel like we are missing out on finding cool stuff and are losing a portion of the value of our treasure since we are forced to sell it instead of using it.

Tailored but still random

Great to hear you are getting good DM assistance out of the generators. The first thing I did when I made up my methods that roll for treasure is allow each of them to have flags passed in that avoid psionic and epic treasure. (Since it is an OGL compliant database of treasure there was nothing from Incarnum I had to worry about). The idea of "tailored but random" is a key theme I am working on for the random encounter generator but it holds here as well. The more control you have as a user/DM to customize the more useful it becomes.

More creatures!!!

I was looking for lizardfolk the other day and my hopes were dashed, lol!

The Overlord does not want to dash any hopes especially those of the faithful. I have a list of creatures which are 98% done. I parsed them out of another database and converted them to the format I need to consume and use...but there are still a few things to clean up and I have been procrastinating. Most are about 2 minutes away from complete at best. I will add your lizardfolk and if you take a few minutes and make me a list of a few others you really miss I get all those done first as well!
