Trimming audio files for game soundtracks

I bought the soundtrack to Sherlock Holmes: Game of Shadows, and a few of the tracks work great for ambient music during the first half, then great for action music during the second half. Apparently Hans Zimmer is not aware that people might want to keep a consistent mood on a playlist. *scoff*

So what's a good way to trim these audio files? Preferably a free software program.
